- Hospital level: JCI accreditation — the international standard U.S. patients know — held by leading Colombian hospitals. We reference JCI only at hospital level, never for individual clinics or surgeons, because that’s how JCI works.
- Surgeon level: every legitimate Colombian physician appears in ReTHUS, the national health-professional registry. We verify surgeons there before any introduction — and you can too.

If the knee or back condition is service-connected and the surgery is medically necessary for it, that's the FMP's core use case. Register, get a predetermination through Ask VA for the specific procedure, and ensure the surgical documentation names the rated condition.
Will VA pay a Medellin hospital directly?
VA guidance allows the provider to file the FMP claim and be paid directly. Whether a given hospital will do so depends on the clinic - building those direct-bill relationships locally is a core part of what we do.
Is post-surgical rehab in Colombia covered by FMP?

How do I verify a Colombian surgeon myself?
Check the surgeon in Colombia's ReTHUS national registry of health professionals, and confirm the hospital's JCI accreditation status on JCI's public directory. Any legitimate provider expects both checks.
