You search for a knee replacement, open Ontario’s wait-time tool, and find a number that looks promising. Before you assume it is your remaining wait, check which clock you are reading. Ontario reports Wait 1, referral to first clinician appointment, separately from Wait 2, decision to operate through the procedure. The combined patient journey may be longer, especially when imaging, additional specialists or an unconfirmed surgical decision come first.
Choose the correct clock
If you are awaiting an initial specialist visit, Wait 1 is the more relevant measure. If the specialist has recommended surgery and you are waiting for an operation date, inspect Wait 2 for the right procedure and priority level. Do not add two published averages as though they describe one individual: they may refer to different populations and time periods.
Filter by procedure, region and priority
A hip replacement figure should not stand in for a spinal procedure. Ontario publishes results for specified hospitals and procedure types, and the patient’s clinical priority affects expected timelines. The tool may show missing or suppressed data, which does not mean a facility has a zero-day wait. Select your location and ask the clinician which priority category applies to you.
Read completed-case data with caution
Wait-time dashboards often summarize completed cases: the people who already received care. These numbers describe past experience, not a reservation or prediction for an individual currently waiting. Ask when the hospital last updated the figure and whether the surgeon’s personal operating list differs from the broader facility.
Turn data into the right conversation
Instead of asking, “Why is your wait longer than the website?” ask whether the delay is before consultation, imaging, anesthetic clearance, hospital capacity or an operating-room slot. That answer tells you whether another referral, another hospital or a revised clinical assessment is even worth considering.
- Record the date your referral was sent and acknowledged
- Ask which period, Wait 1 or Wait 2, your situation falls into
- Select the exact procedure and clinical priority in the tool
- Request a current individualized estimate from the booking office
- Record who you spoke to and the next check-in date
The decision, not just the date
The dashboard is a starting point, not a clinical assessment. A worsening condition deserves a call to your treating team rather than more spreadsheet comparisons. If you are comparing private options as well, request a written procedure-specific quote and an independent review of your travel suitability before changing plans.

Compare options without guessing
Tell us the procedure, where you are waiting and what timeline you have been given. We can help organize questions to ask potential providers and discuss nonbinding private-care options. No procedure date, price, funding or medical suitability is guaranteed. This is an information and referral service, not a clinical assessment.
