The best thing about vetting a Colombian surgeon is that you don't have to take anyone's word for anything — including ours. Colombia maintains a public, searchable national registry of every licensed health professional, and hospital accreditation is independently verifiable online. Here is the paper trail, and exactly how to walk it from your couch in Canada.

Layer 1: ReTHUS — the national physician registry

ReTHUS (Registro Único Nacional del Talento Humano en Salud) is Colombia's official register of health-sector professionals, run under the Ministry of Health. Every legitimately licensed physician appears in it. Search the surgeon's full name; the record confirms they are authorized to practice medicine in Colombia and shows their registered credentials.

Layer 2: Specialty certification

Licensure says "doctor"; you also want "specialist." Ask directly: where did you complete your specialty residency, and which Colombian specialty society are you a member of? Colombian specialty societies (orthopedics, plastic surgery's SCCP, ophthalmology, and others) maintain member directories, and a serious surgeon will volunteer this before you ask. Cross-check the society listing against the ReTHUS record — names and specialties should agree.

Layer 3: The hospital — JCI and habilitación

Joint Commission International accreditation is the most recognized international hospital standard — and here precision matters: JCI accredits hospitals, not individual clinics or surgeons. If a website implies a doctor is "JCI-accredited," that's a red flag about the marketing, whatever the surgery. Verify the actual hospital by name in JCI's public directory. Beyond JCI, every legally operating facility in Colombia must hold habilitación — government licensing that specifies which complexity of services it may deliver. Ask where, exactly, your procedure will be performed, and confirm that facility — not an affiliated office — holds the right authorization level.

Layer 4: The specifics in writing

A credentialed surgeon at an accredited hospital should have no hesitation putting the details on paper:

• Named hospital where surgery occurs (not "our clinic");
• Implant or device system by manufacturer, when applicable;
• Who administers anesthesia (a physician anesthesiologist) and the complication/ICU protocol;
• Itemized pricing — and remember all figures you research in advance are typical 2026 ranges, not quotes, until the surgeon has your imaging;
• Follow-up plan and English-language records package for your Canadian aftercare.
